Gràcia

A village inside a city

Gracia, once upon a time, was a seperate village from Barcelona and was conected to the Catalan capital by the roads Gran de Gracia and Passeig de Gracia. Now it's a hip place to hang out for locals and the ex-pat community alike with small bars, restaurants, terraces, plazas and a welcoming ambience.

The centre of Gracia, is without doubt the 2 main plazas; Plaza del Sol and Plaza Rius i Taulet. Pl. del Sol offers many small bars and pre clubs such as Café del Sol and Sol de Nit as well as Schwarma's and natural fresh fruit juices at Dejavu. Pl. Rius i Taulet is where the local Town Hall is located and offers a much more family atmosphere with kids playing football as their parents take in the sunshine and have a coffee.

Carrer Verdí is the main street in Gracia offering a whole host of boutique shopping opportunities, restaurants and the local V.O. Cinema. At the very bottom of this street (Verdí with Pl. Revolució) you can find the lively, cramped, smokey bar, "Canigo", one of Gracias oldest and cheapest bars.

The best time to visit Gracia is during the Festes where the locals decorate the streets and the party lasts all week. Festes is on from about the 21st August for a week, check the local press for details.

Gracia is one of those places that you can live for years (and I did) and still find something new every week. Just taking to the streets and aimlessly roaming is probably the best way to explore the area and find interesting stuff to do. It's very easy to get lost in Gracia, so remeber to take a map.
