The Jemez Mountains lay to the Northeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico, with their tallest peak looking 11,000 ft over the small town of Jemez Springs. The surrounding land is strewn with towering red rock mesas, the remnant of a massive volcanic explosion that occurred over a million years ago. Due to the once volcanically active nature of the area, the water just above the rock bed is thermodynamically heated by magma underground, which has created scores of mineral rich natural hot springs. These natural pools are the most attractive feature of the region, and Jemez Springs lies at their heart. There is an abundant range of commercial and public land springs available, saturated with calcium, magnesium and sulphur. Most enjoyable are the icy springs where a “cold plunge” will boost your blood circulation. In Jemez Springs, several locally owned motels and boarding rooms offer quaint shelter for visitors. There are a few small eateries that boast good southwestern style menus, and one tavern where, on the weekends, local musicians often take the stage. Outside of town, Jemez Valley runs in a 45 mile stretch going north up through the Valles Caldera Preserves. All along the mountain road are campsites, hiking trails and, of course, hot springs. The ancient, rugged landscape of Jemez, together with the health giving waters, brew a special kind of magic in this bewitching place.
