Mexico's newest resort area juts out into the sea from the Yucatán Peninsula's easternmost corner, roughly 125 miles from the country's coastal border with Belize. Although the modern, tourist-friendly version of Cancún began to take shape in the early 1970s, it has quickly grown into one of Latin America's most popular destinations for sun and relaxation. Along with its endless stretches of pristine sand beaches, all-inclusive hotels, and rowdy nightclubs, this city offers an impressive variety of scenic and cultural opportunities. Included among the former are the Isla Mujeres, a small coastal atoll 10 miles from the mainland whose many coral reefs make it an ideal spot for snorkeling and scuba diving, as well as the Nichupte and Bojorquez lagoons. The Yucatán is also home to a striking array of Mayan ruins, which are collectively known as La Ruta Puuc. From Cancún, day trips are available to the remains of Chichen-Itza, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
