Lake Orion (pronounced OR-ee-un) is a village in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,715 at the 2000 census. Although the official population of the village is only 2,715, Orion Township's population is much larger and the terms "Lake Orion" or "the Orion area" are often used to describe both the township and the village. Lake Orion and the surrounding area is one of the largest and fastest growing suburban areas in Michigan, partially caused by the urban sprawl of Metro Detroit.
Lake Orion (or Orion Township) is home to Lake Orion High School, Bald Mountain State Park, Indianwood Golf and Country Club, Canterbury Village, The Scripps Mansion, and a General Motors manufacturing plant.
Union President Jimmy Hoffa, musician Alice Cooper actress Cynthia Watros, newspaper magnate William Edmund Scripps, and Mickey Lolich of the Detroit Tigers (now retired), are among those that kept residences in Lake Orion.
