Travellers who start their trip to the Mexican west coast or to Baja California are likely to choose the route from Chihuahua to Los Mochis. Topolobampo on the Pacific coast is located 25km/15.5mi from Los Mochis; take a ferry from there to La Paz. Due to delays, night may fall before reaching the most interesting landscapes between Creel and Los Mochis. It is worth considering starting the trip in Los Mochis – then, the light of the day will reveal the beauty of the land. The train negotiates a change in altitude of almost 2,500m/8,200ft and goes through 86 tunnels and over 39 bridges in a very interesting landscape. There are highlands with cactuses, pine forests, hills and mountains, bizarre rock formations and canyons, lush mountain slopes and subtropical plantations, as well as palm and bamboo groves. The magnificent canyons, up to 1,200m/4,000ft deep and 1,500m/4,900ft wide, are located between Creel and Los Mochis. The Copper Canyons are in every way as impressive as the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Some mountain peaks are bald, some permit pine trees to grow, and all are snow-covered in winter. This is a huge contrast to the lush tropical vegetation down on the canyon floor, which includes citrus fruit trees and banana plants. The most remarkable canyons are the Batopilas, Sinforosa, Tararécura, Chinipas, Candameña and the Río San Miguel Canyon.
