Port city and media capital, domicile for the upper class and party paradise for sailors and tourists, Hamburg has always been a place where people of different origins collide. Three rivers merge in this port city, and the city's flair is accordingly dictated by water and seafaring: whether it's strolling at the Jungfernsteig at the man-made city lake known as the Binnenalster, traversing the numerous bridges that stretch over the city's small canals, browsing at the fish market, or having a beer in a pub decorated polar bear-style, again and again Hamburg exudes a maritime atmosphere. Germany's second-largest city is also an urban and multicultural center that offers an arena to a wide spectrum of lifestyles. When you head westward from the Old Town, north of the Reperbahn party mile, you reach the Schanzenviertel neighborhood, which, as an alternative and bohemian center, offers terrific opportunities to observe people (and to rummage through book stores). A huge variety of theaters, concert venues, and clubs makes Hamburg an exciting city 24 hours a day, any time of the year.
