The friendly colonial town is surrounded by fruit orchards and vineyards and has a comfortable climate. There are also haciendas where the owners raise fighting bulls. The area is mostly famous for the healing hot thermal springs (aguas calientes) in and around the city.
The Spaniards fought hard against the natives before taking the city in 1575. They gave it the elaborate name History Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguas Calientes. For a long period, the Spaniards used the place only as an outpost to fight their Indian enemies. Aguacalientes became the capital after the state of Aguacalientes was created in 1957. An important railway junction, the city became the target and stronghold of different sides in the battles during the revolution. Today, more than half the citizens of the state of Aguacalientes live in the state capital, where agriculture along with the orchards and vineyards provide most employment.
