A long, thin island, Hvar is a land of vineyards, lavender fields and old Venetian coastal villages with an altogether slower, more pleasurable way of life. The most popular and by far and away the most charming resort is Hvar Town. Close by, all grouped together on the western end of the island, are Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrboska. The eastern end of Hvar is sparsely populated and offers little of cultural interest. If you really want to get away from it all, head for the emerald green waters and sun- scorched slopes of the south coast.
