Though most people think of Panaji as a convenient stop for a night before moving on to the beaches, Panaji should be a must-see on any itinerary. You'd be hard-pressed to find a town in Goa more atmospheric or more enchanting; the old Portuguese quarter is a romantic, crumbling reminder of Goa's colonial past, with buildings and churches in every color of peeling, sun-kissed pastel and leafy plazas perfect for strolling. The banks of the Mandovi River are a scenic place to enjoy some of Goa's famed seafood, while a short walk into the hills above town reveals the beautiful houses of the town's elite.
