While South Dakota is probably best known as the home of Mount Rushmore, there is more to see and do here than you might ever imagine. From the peaks and caverns of the Black Hills to the museums and cultural sites in the eastern part of the state, there is something here for everyone.
The Black Hills are home to some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Hike Harney Peak, drive through the Badlands Loop, or camp at Custer State Park. For nature lovers, the possibilities are endless. If history and culture are your thing, stop by Deadwood for a taste of the Wild West, visit Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse to see monumental sculpture and learn a little more about the country's heritage, or stop in at any of the other picturesque towns in the area.
Through the rest of the state you'll find rolling prairies, wide open sky, and towns founded by the pioneers who came in their covered wagons.
And Native American culture is alive and well on South Dakota's American Indian Reservations. In places such as the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation southeast of the Black Hills, you'll find plenty to photograph. The people are friendly and helpful.
