A state with an interesting reputation; the Garden State, as it is known, is loaded with great people and great food and, (perhaps unfortunately?!) the largest concentration of malls in the world, even more than the Los Angeles metro area. Many find themselves in its sprawling northeast, just across the Hudson River from New York City and containing a surprising amount of cultural life, as well as a refreshing love of learning and knowledge and even eccentricity.
NJ is known for its many great musicians, scientists, etc, but perhaps less so for its often surprisingly cosmopolitan citizens, many of whom travel far and wide.
A modern, can-do state with a bustling economy, NJ also has a lot of history and day to day real-life drama. Residents and former residents are known for telling it like it is, and complaining a lot, and New Jersey is still not known as a tourist destination, but despite its gritty reputation, which is well deserved, it can be surprisingly down to earth and fun
Long ago, it was one of the birthplaces of the American Revolution, today, New Jersey and New Jerseyans are frank, surprisingly tolerant in ther lovably grumpy way, and often progressive politically. They come from all the corners of the globe, but live and work together largely in peace. Despite its chaos, New Jersey has many charms, and even its share of hidden beauty. The Garden State nickname that sometimes seemed inappropriate in the recent past is true again, as once sterile suburbs mature and flourish. However, be forewarned, the traffic, chaos and often, terrible design of New Jersey's highway signs make getting around a little difficult for those who are visiting for the first time.
In particular, navigating Newark Airport can be utterly frustrating, especially when you have a rental car to return and a flight to catch.
