A community of Maroons - proud and self-governed descendants of the first slaves
Cockpit Country lies high at the edge of the inaccessible main site of Leeward-Maroons. About 3000 descendants of the slaves released by the Spaniards lead a secluded life in the mountains today. The Maroons (derived from the Spanish word cimarrĂ³n, mountain-top dwellers) were able to keep a certain autonomous status to this day. A visit should be announced to the head of state ahead of time. You will be greeted kindly and shown around. A walk across unsecured paths leads to the deeper located Old Town and to the grave of the leader and hero Koyo. The brush is an inexhaustible reservoir of medicinal herbs, spices, teas, edible fruits for the Maroons.
