Veli Lošinj is a compact, little fishing town of pastel-coloured houses built around a narrow bay. It’s quieter and more authentic than its neighbour, but still has a few things worth seeing, a modest selection of decent fish restaurants and an unusual dolphin research centre.
During the late 19th century, when the island was making its name as a popular winter destination for members of the Austrian aristocracy, Karl Stephan von Hapsburg had a mansion built on the edge of town. He called it Seewarte (Morska Straža in Croatian) and had the surrounding parkland planted with exotic trees, such as magnolia and eucalyptus, and evergreen firs, pines and cypresses. Today the building houses a sanatorium for the treatment of respiratory diseases.
