Journey back in time to when thick glacier covered the earth.
On a boat tour of the over 100 km long Glacier Bay all Alaskan dreams come true: dramatic glacial heads, steep fjord walls, ice floes on which seals doze and - with a little luck - even humpback whales breaching and fluking in front of a breathtaking backdrop.
Ten glaciers terminate in the 110 km long bay. The silhouette of the sublime Mt Fairweather rises 4663 meters high. It is hard to believe that this huge bay only 200 years ago did not exist! Even in1792, as Captain George Vancouver passed here, this area was well under a 1200 meter thick glacier. Since then, the surrounding glaciers, forests and wild flowers moved in to conquer more and more of the bare rocky slopes. Bears and over 200 bird species are now at home here. The starting point for all tours, founded in 1925, is the village of Gustavus. It consists of about 13 000 square kilometers of protected area at the south end/ Pacific entrance of the Bay (Seasonally a ferry ferry from Juneau is available).
