Gathered between the snaking Rio Grande River and the rough hewn Taos Mountains is the small town of Taos, New Mexico. It is rare that a town of only 5,200 people has so much to offer. While it is no buzzing metropolis, there is much to see and do. You can wile away your days strolling between the many galleries featuring local artist paintings and jewelry, grab a coffee at one of the homey, locally owned cafes, and stop in at the famous adobe-constructed San Francisco de Asis church, built by Franciscan Fathers in 1772. You could drive out past Taos and take a tour of the community of William F. Buckley inspired sustainable living houses, and then watch the fiery New Mexico sunset from the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, the third highest bridge in the U.S. If you are an outdoors enthusiast, in winter, the Taos slopes are known to be some of the most wicked in the country. Incredible rock climbing and white water rafting opportunities are available the rest of the year. Everyone who visits the wild lands of Taos should visit the Taos pueblo, a still functioning Native American settlement. The sprawling complex of earthen buildings is said to originate from long before the age of Columbus. If you are craving dazzling vistas and broader cultural horizons, Taos is a fine place to start.
