The lake is at the bottom of an huge caldera. There are not so many possibilities to stay there, but basic accommodation is available. Most tourists probably come to hike up to Gunung Batur. A local agency somehow has the monopoly to sell tours up to the mountain, therefor the prices are high. At the time we have been there (2006), the mountain also was protected in order to hinder people to hike up on their own. We have been sent away and our car was escorted by some motorcycles :)
What we enjoyed very much, was driving through the area west of the lake. There are old lava fields which make you feel like being on the moon.
