Big Sur

The most dramatic stretch of coastline in California and, perhaps, the world

Though there's actually a town named Big Sur, Big Sur usually refers to the 90 miles of raw, winding coastline between Carmel and San Simeon. This is where the jagged Santa Lucia mountains stand firm against the Pacific Ocean, a sight so magnificent that, unless you work to keep your eyes on the road, you'll drive straight off the mountainside. Writers like Henry Miller, Hunter S. Thompson, and Jack Kerouac all spent time in Big Sur, drawn to her wild, unique beauty. Though you can drive through Big Sur in about 4 hours, you should take as long as you can to camp, hike, and savor one of California's most beloved sights.

Note: there are often rock slides in the area, don't be surprised if your drive is delayed!
