Backed by a flat, fertile hinterland, the old town of Nin is wonderful, sitting compact on a small island (500 m by 500 m) jutting out into a lagoon and joined to the mainland by a 70-m-long pedestrian stone bridge which brings you directly to the town gate, built between the 15th and 18th centuries. The medieval churches are Nin’s main attraction, the best known being the tiny but perfectly proportioned ninth-century Church of the Holy Cross. Today there are minimum tourist facilities. Most visitors arrive from Zadar, or stay in the purpose-built package resort of Zaton, 2 km to the south, where there are some decent stretches of sand and pebble beach and warm, shallow water for bathing.
