Background
Founded by ancient Greeks from Issa (on the island of Vis), the settlement was originally called Epidauros. In 228 BC, it was taken by the Romans, only to be devastated at the beginning of the seventh century by rampaging tribes of Avars and Slavs. The name Cavtat originates from Civitas Vetus, as Roman refugees in the newly established Ragusa (present-day Dubrovnik) used to call their former home.
The area was incorporated into the Republic of Dubrovnik during the 15th century; Cavtat was rebuilt and walled, and a rector installed to govern the town and the rural hinterland region known as Konavle. Tourism began in the early 1900s under Austro- Hungary; during the 1980s several large hotel complexes were erected and Cavtat turned into a popular package resort. For a year from October 1991, Cavtat was occupied by the JNA (Yugoslav Peoples’ Army). The town suffered minimal material damage, though many houses in the villages of Konavle were looted and burnt during this period.Air
