The modern and largely characterless buildings beyond the lagoon and in the southern fringe areas of Ajman characterize a fast-growing 21st-century Arabic city
Ajman, the capital of the emirate of the same name, is situated on a peninsula between the Arabian Gulf and the Khor Ajman estuary Khor Ajman which cuts inland in the north. Small shops line the streets of the city centre, as well as several banks, bureaux de change and simple restaurants serving Arabic cuisine. A stroll through the Old Souk is a great way of becoming familiar with the hustle and bustle of everyday life; here, the haggling over prices lasts from early morning until long after dark. Except during lunchtime that is, when the city streets seem entirely deserted.
