Sharjah was the first emirate to open itself to tourism
has many attractions and outstanding museums – especially in the restored Old City – which one should plan to tour for at least an entire day. the capital of the smallest sheikdom in the UAE which bears the same name, lies on a peninsula. The community used to live off fishing and a Dhau shipyard; today, industrial districts, a large shipyard, and a television station have been added. The fort erected at the end of the 18th century, which protected the emirate in conjunction with the guard towers by the shore and which served as the seat of the ruling family for 150 years, was converted into a museum which is well worth a visit.
The Sharjah International Airport, which appears after only ten kilometres / six miles, is worth a side trip. With its three domes, tower, and multiple decorations, the airport building looks more like a neo-Islamic mosque then a modern functional building. The airport was built at the end of the 70s in the 20th century.
