It lies on a peninsula formed by the gulf and a lagoon
In the Old City erected on the northern tip of the peninsula in the 16th century, many decayed houses are made from coral limestone using traditional construction techniques. The fort from the 19th century, topped by a splendid wind tower, now houses a museum with archaeological finds, ancient documents, rare coins, and a shell collection; the museum is well worth seeing. The busy fish market and the Irani Souk are located nearby. A bridge leads across to the modern district if Nakheel, which extends to the foothills of the Hajar Mountains.
