Hili Archaeological Park, Al Ain

by Marco Polo

An archaeological site with an approximately 4700 year old restored circular grave

The climate here is hotter than it is on the coast, but it is more bearable since the humidity is significantly lower. In the 1960s, Danish archaeologists discovered numerous remains of settlements and overground circular tombs , which confirmed the theory that this region was already inhabited more than 5,000 years ago. The Hili Archaeological Gardens can be accessed from Ardh Al-Jaw Street near the Dubai Highway, through a large iron gate decorated with flowers.
The Great Hili Tomb Great Hili Tomb is the most significant find. Made of smooth stone blocks the tomb has a diameter of 8m/26ft and is 2.5m/8ft high. Its date of origin is estimated at 2500 BC. Remarkable are the two tomb entrances with the architect’s engravings above. They display the shapes of humans and Oryx antelopes, which can be clearly identified by their two long horns. Based on the burial objects, some of which are exhibited at the Museum of Al Ain, the tomb is attributed to the Umm al-Nar culture Umm al-Nar culture between 3000 and 2000 BC.
