The heart of the city
In the center of this beloved square, where all major political announcements are made, stands a statue of Iceland's national hero, Jón Sigurðsson, created by Einar Jónsson. He looks out from a gray basalt building: Alþingishús, the seat of the Icelandic parliament. To its left stands Reykjavík's oldest church, the cathedral constructed in 1776. The square's east side is dominated by the very traditional Hótel Borg.
