"Thor's Forest" in the lee of the glacier

East of Hvolsvöllur lies the valley of Þórsmörk, surrounded by three glaciers. Protected by mountains and ice, it enjoys a mild climate, with lush green vegetation. Numerous hiking paths criss-cross the valley, which is bounded by rushing glacial streams, making it a favorite outing spot for Icelanders. Starting in Þórsmörk you can take a four-day trek to Landmannalaugar, or a two-day hike to Skógar. Two hiking associations--Ferðafélags Íslands and Útivist--will provide more information.
