Once the gates of hell, today an active volcano
The most famous and active volcano in Iceland is Hekla, a stratovolcano 4 km (2.5 miles) long. The massive peak is visible even from far away, and until the 18th century the mountain was believed to be the "Gateway to Hell." The volcano's numerous eruptions have made the surrounding area an impressive landscape of lava flows. The most recent eruptions came in 1991 and 2000. The easiest way to climb the peak is from the north, and you will be rewarded with a splendid view from the top.
