This is South Africa’s first dorp, founded in 1837 by Michiel van Breda, an important local figure. From his farm, Zoetendalsvlei, he played an active role in the development of the Merino sheep industry throughout South Africa and was the first mayor of Cape Town in 1840. Sheep farming, as well as wheat, remains the mainstay of the local economy.
