The black immigrant mineworkers and their South Africa counterparts were forced to live in shanty towns – or townships as they were later called. Any trip to Johannesburg should include tours which take you back in time to the apartheid era, where being black was to suffer the indignity of being regarded as “non-white”, of being forced to live in the townships, of being forbidden to enter into a mixed colour relationship, or being prevented by law from sitting on the same park bench as a white person. A tour to Soweto with a visit to the Hector Peterson Memorial, the Regina Mundi Church, and perhaps lunch at Wandies, will give you a deeper understanding of this troubled time in South Africa’s history, and why we can be so grateful to men such as Nelson Mandela for bringing us to the point at where we are today - the point where hope has replaced despair, and where we know that the future will be better than the past, despite what uninformed press may say.
