North of Cairo the Nile divides into two main arms that, before they flow into the Mediterranean, deposit their fertile sediments onto the river’s delta. Countless minor branches and canals serve to irrigate this region which can, without exaggeration, be called the garden of Egypt. Travelers cross through the delta on their way to Alexandria. This city on the Mediterranean, founded in 332 BC by Alexander the Great, exists in at least two states: one mythical, the other real. Its very name seems unavoidably linked to such words as ambiance and flair, it ought to possess both historical grandeur and a seaside promenade on which the elites of both Europe and the Orient stroll. The real Alexandria of today--called Al-Iskanderiyya by Egyptians--is an industrial city with six million inhabitants. From Cairo, you may reach it by train, or by tourist busses that take the highway through the desert.
