Abu Simbel - the goal of many tourists, even though it is difficult or relatively costly to get there. Directly on the shores of Lake Nasser, Lake Nasser the gigantic figures on the temple façades look down upon blue water and the desert behind.
Abu Simbel lies in the extreme south of the country, about 280km/170mi south of Aswan. The tourist rush is biggest when the convoys arrive – if you want to enjoy the temples in peace and quiet, stay overnight. The figures look particularly good in the light of the morning sun, and even today, visitors feel a sense of awe at the power of the pharaoh who had these mighty structures built. The two temples with their massive façades originally stood at the Second Nile Cataract. However, in that place they would have sunk into the waters after the construction of the Aswan High Dam. In 1964 these important temples were therefore moved to their present site in a spectacular rescue.
