Despite the enormous economic growth – one of the most important industrial centres of the country has developed behind the dam – and a rapidly rising population, the centre of Aswan has not lost its peaceful character, and many still praise it as the most beautiful city of Egypt. This is particularly due to its picturesque location at the First Nile Cataract. Here, the wide river divides into several arms and encloses granite cliffs and islands which protrude from the water like huge stones. A stroll through the bazaar with its oriental atmosphere is also an unforgettable experience for many visitors. Due to the dry, hot climate, the city is also visited as a spa. The Western Desert stretches right up to the banks of the Nile.
