Esna

Esna

by Marco Polo

Esna is a small rural town on the left bank of the Nile

It is visited particularly for the magnificent Temple of Khnum. Between the quays and the temple, which lies at the centre of the town, there is a small but very lively bazaar where especially beautiful cloths are sold. History In ancient times, Esna and its neighbouring settlement Enit (or Iunit) was one of the most important settlements in Egypt and was named Tesnet, from which the Coptic Sne and today’s Esna are derived. The Greeks named the city after the Nile perch (Lates niloticus), which was worshipped here as a holy animal and buried in extensive necropolises. Esna is one of the centres of Coptic religion.
