Majestic mountains guard the sacred center of the peninsula, but at its edges you may dive, surf, dance and party, no matter whether you have come direct from Europe, from Cairo or Hurghada--Sinai can be reached within hours from any of them. Most of the charter jets from Europe land at Sharm el-Sheikh , the noisy beach resort at the southern tip of Sinai, with its line of coral reefs just offshore. Many believe these are the most beautiful reefs in the world, surrounded by seawater so clear that looking over the side of the boat may make you dizzy. But soon after the bus trip begins you sense that Sinai is a special place. You will pass through fascinating mountains, majestic, quiet and mysterious, especially on the stretches to Nuweiba and past St. Catherine’s Monastery. The rocks glow with magic colors, around each corner you encounter bizarre new formations. Scholars from around the world have combed this biblical landscape looking for evidence for the Old Testament. Several thousand Israelites, scripture says, crossed Sinai, led by Moses, on their way out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. The mountain on which Moses received the Ten Commandments from God rises just south of St. Catherine’s, in the center of Sinai. The peninsula, the threshold of Asia, forms a triangular wedge between the African and Asian continents, with the Gulf of Suez and Suez Canal to its west, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Israeli Negev Desert to its east, and the Mediterranean to the north. About 300,000 people live on the peninsula, concentrated along the coast. The East Coast offers everything that makes a tourist’s heart beat faster: luxury resorts and cheap bamboo huts, dance bars and discos, diving and surfing schools, beautiful beaches and….sun all year round.
