Esztergom (pop. 32,000), located on the right-hand terraces of the Danube, at the entrance to the Danube gorge through the central Hungarian highlands, is one of Hungary’s oldest towns, with noteworthy buildings and historic monuments. The Magyars settled the area of Esztergom as early as the 9th century. During the Middle Ages, Esztergom rose to become one of the most important royal residences in the Hungarian empire alongside Székesfehérvár, and seat of the archbishop. King Béla III had the castle of Esztergom extended into a magnificent residence. Occupied during the Turkish wars, the town flourished once more in the 18th century. After the Second World War, several larger industrial companies were also settled here.
