Gellért Baths

The famous medicinal spa and hotel is one of the most beautiful of its kind in Budapest and an important art nouveau monument in the Hungarian capital

A spa that already existed here in the 13th century used the thermal waters of Gellért Hill for healing treatments. According to a report by the chronicler Evliya úelebi from Istanbul, the Turks turned the spa into a luxurious bath house, but the spa on Gellért Hill also enjoyed great popularity under the Habsburg rulers. After that building was demolished around the end of the 19th century, the present building, which has been restored to its former splendour, was created between 1911 and 1918 to designs in late Secessionist style by Ármin Hegedüs, Artúr Sebestyén and Izidor Stark that united the hotel and thermal baths under one roof. The opulently designed entrance to the thermal bath lies on the narrow Kelenhegy út, while the hotel and café face onto Szent Gellért tér. The spa installations, such as the thermal bath with sliding roof, the jacuzzi and saunas, as well as the exterior facilities with the wave pool, have all been modernized.
On Fridays and Saturdays in July and August, from 8pm to midnight, the wave pool of the Gellért Bath has evening bathing with music.
