On the north-eastern slope of Gellért Hill, above the bridgehead for the Elizabeth Bridge, stands the monumental bronze sculpture of the bishop and martyr St Gellért. It was created by Gyula Jankovits in 1902 and is surrounded by a semi-circular colonnade. An artificial waterfall burbles beneath the memorial. The best view of the memorial is from the Elizabeth Bridge, which leads directly towards the pointed cliff that gives the saint’s statue its dramatic site. In order to see the saint from close up, it is necessary to climb up the steps from the bridgehead. It takes about 20 minutes to continue from the memorial to the summit of the hill and its citadel (see below), an enjoyable walk with wonderful views of the city.
