Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum)

by Marco Polo

With its eight conspicuous columns and huge open-air steps, the National Museum is one of the city’s most impressive buildings. The history of the country is comprehensively featured here, from the Stone Age to the present.

In the 19th-century history of Budapest, the Széchenyi family appears again and again; so too with the Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum), which owes its foundation to Count Ferenc Széchenyi’s commitment. Although the institution was already established in 1802, and Mihály Pollack was hired to design the building, the classical-style museum was not inaugurated until 1847.A memorial completed by Alajos Stróbl in 1893, to the famous Hungarian poet János Arany (1817–1882), stands in front of the museum. Further busts and memorials of famous people can be found in the park-like museum garden.
