The building of a parliament in Budapest as a place where the legislative assembly, or rather the Hungarian estates, could meet was already agreed after the Compromise of 1867 with Austria, but was only realized with considerable delay. Until 1847 the legislative assembly had its permanent seat in Pressburg, today’s Bratislava, and was then moved to Pest, where it met in various buildings until the new parliament was completed. After a 20-year period of construction, the huge complex was inaugurated in 1904. The neo-Gothic façade conceals a highly modern iron construction, which gives the complicated room designs the necessary stability.
