Budapest’s glorious boulevard, begun in 1872, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002. Villas, mansions and important cultural institutions such as the state opera line its majestic course.
Glorious boulevard Andrássy út runs for a distance of 2.5km/1.5mi in a north-easterly direction out of the city, from Erzsébet térto Hosök tere(Heroes’ Square), with the Millennium Column as the visual endpoint. Two spacious squares, the Oktogon and Kodály körönd, interrupt its course. Continental Europe’s oldest underground railway, affectionately called the »Little One« by Budapest’s inhabitants, has been running underneath Andrássy út since 1896.
