The monumental size of the basilica is underlined by its 96m/315ft-tall central dome and two west towers in height 80m/262ft. In 1845 the design of the church was entrusted to József Hild, who had already made a name for himself as the architect of the cathedrals in Eger and Esztergom. He was still largely a devotee of the classical style, and the ground plan of the building in the shape of a Greek cross and the central dome survive from his plan. After Hild’s death in 1867, Miklós Ybl brought new ideas that eventually gave the church its monumental neo-Renaissance style. St Stephen’s was completed by József Kauser after the death of Ybl in 1905.
