This ritual site from pre-Columbian days is the most important dig in Costa Rica
20 km north of Turrialba, on the slopes of the volcano of the same name, lies Costa Rica’s most important archeological site which is also a national monument. Its streets, grave mounds, irrigation system and foundations point to a settlement that flourished between 800 and 1400, but was inhabited as early as 500 BC. Artistic and ritual objects made of ceramics, jade, gold and semi-precious stones provide testimony to the site’s cultural and religious importance. There is a wonderful view of the area from the park’s mirador.
