Once the richest town of the continent and today the highest - Potosi is reached within three hours by bus from Sucre. It lies at the foot of the Cerro Rico. It owes its foundation in 1545 to this “rich hill” because that’s when the Spaniards discovered its profitable veins of silver. A dozen of richly decorated baroque churches and many colonial houses with balconies still remind viewers of the old wealth in the town. The history of the town is documented in the Casa real de Moneda which is one of the most remarkable buildings of the town as well. Accommodation: Hostal Libertador. El Mesón is a good restaurant. Café Museo is worth a visit as is Restaurante del Ingenio Marco, a former silver washing plant which was converted into a museum with restaurant.
