Asakusa Kannon Temple (Sensōji)

by Marco Polo

Colorful hustle and bustle: Thousands come to the temple of the merciful deity

According to legend, two fishermen pulled a little statue of the godess of mercy, Kannon, out of the Miyato River with their nets in the year 628. When all attempts to put the figure back into the water failed, the two gave the mysterious find to their lord. He soon had a hall built - the precursor of today's temple. The legendary Kannon statue has been missing for centuries already. The Sensoji is the intellectual and structural center of the city district Asakusa, which was the largest nightclub district of the city for a long time, to this day.
