The most famous sight in Japan is the mausoleum of the Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is for the first great Shogun and founder of the Tokugawa dynasty which ruled over Japan before its opening more than 250 years ago. The shrine complex was ordered to be built by a grandson in 1634 and was built within two years by 15,000 craftsmen and the best artists of that time in a splendor that was unusual for Japan. The complex shadowed by cedars consciously reflects the wealth and power of the Tokugawa clan. The way to the shrine district runs along the sacred Shinkyo Bridge past many stone steps through a gigantic gate with a pagoda. In every building – beneath it the three sacred shed with carved elephants and the sacred stable with the three famous monkeys which don’t want to hear, say or see anything – you’ll find extraordinary works of art. The showpiece of the complex is the “Sun gate” Yomei-mon which is decorated with millions of gold foils and precious carvings. Open daily 8 am to 5 pm, Nov.- March 8 am to 4 pm, admission according to combination ticket 900-1300 ¥, Tobu bus from the station to the stop at Shinkyo or Nishi-sando.
