Okutan

Okutan is an institution in itself, it was founded 350 years ago to serve vegetarian temple meals to monks. Even today it serves only two set meals, the 'yudofu' which changes slightly with the seasons and includes a pot of tofu boiled at your table, fried tofu on a stick, vegetable tempura, yam soup, and pickled vegetables and the second a traditional Chinese meal of tofu. You can be seated in tatami rooms or outdoors in the beautiful garden. The restaurant is popular and often crowded, it shuts down at 5:30pm and is not open everyday of the week. A meal, with vegetarian accompaniments, would cost around 3000 yen.
