The Minami-za is an important cultural landmark in Kyoto. It is traditionally a Kabuki theatre, which was built in 1610. Today, however, it holds concerts and 'rakugo' (traditional comic storytelling) performances as well. The December Kaomize performances are the most popular. Japan's most famous thespians "show their faces" before their admiring audiences. If a drama is too tedious for you, catch a 'dance' segment instead.
