Ravishingly beautiful: The "floating" gate of the Itukushima shrine near Hiroshima
The famous red Torii of the Itsukushima shrine with to the Misa Mountain in the background is, apart from the Matsu-Shima Bay and the hook of Amanohashidate, one of the “three most beautiful landscapes” of Japan. It is one of the most photographed sights in the country. The island of Miyajima was considered sacred and ordinary mortals were only allowed to enter it in the water through the Torii. The island with further sights, restaurants and souvenir shops can easily be explored; a nice half day trip from Hiroshima.
