Coney Island looks like it's in a bit of a time warp - the fading hues of the arcade fronts, splintering wood stalls, and sideshow freaks are all relics of a bygone era that has largely been forgotten in the U.S. Though it's in danger of being developed to Vegas-like proportons, for now, Coney Island reminds a charming slice of Americana. As the most accessible beach to NYC, Coney Island often sees upwards of 10,000 visitors a day during the high season, with young and old alike munching on corn dogs while walking down the boardwalk and savoring the salty, sea air. The beach itself is popular, but many opt to ride the whiplash-inducing Cyclone rollercoaster or the Wonder Wheel. When you've finished winning stuffed animals at game booths or trying to 'Shoot the Freak,' a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game is the perfect end to a day. Popular events during the year include the hedonistic Mermaid Parade and the 4th of July hot dog eating contest at Nathan's
