The 26m/85ft-high triumphal arch (by Stanford White) was erected in 1892 to commemorate the inauguration of George Washington. In the north of the square stands a statue of the first president (Alexander Calder, 1918), and south of the arch is a monument to Garibaldi (Giovanni Turini; 1888). The Italian independence hero lived on Staten Island from 1848 until 1854.
