Washington Square

Dominated by the mighty Washington Centennial Memorial Arch

The 26m/85ft-high triumphal arch (by Stanford White) was erected in 1892 to commemorate the inauguration of George Washington. In the north of the square stands a statue of the first president (Alexander Calder, 1918), and south of the arch is a monument to Garibaldi (Giovanni Turini; 1888). The Italian independence hero lived on Staten Island from 1848 until 1854.

The heart of the New York University campus, Washington Square Park is hands down best people watching in the city. Each Christmas, a giant tree goes up in front of the arch. The square was recently remodeled so that the fountain is in line with the arch. Find terrific street performers and local celebrities here.
