In 1918 she opened the Whitney Studio Club and the Whitney Studio Gallery in Greenwich Village. Her aim was – in a time when museums, galleries and collectors in the United States still preferred European art – to acquaint a broader public with works by American artists. The first studio museum, which showed predominantly the private collection of the founder, was opened in 1931 in Greenwich Village. The current museum building was built in 1966 according to plans by Marcel Breuer and Hamilton Smith.
Whitney Biennale of American Art has been held here every two years in May. The sales exhibition is at the same time a chance to judge the direction of current creative art work.
Currently Renzo Piano is planning an extension, which will enlarge the exhibition space considerably. The Whitney has over 12,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, films and videos by all important American artists.
On permanent display are Alexander Calder's "Circus" (1926–1931) in the foyer as well as an exhibition with works by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe and Alexander Calder on the fifth floor.
